Mind(the)Plant: A 360-Degree Window into the Hidden Life of Plants

A plant on a windowsill, a climber in a garden, a tree beside the road: they seem quiet, almost motionless. Yet how much of their activity escapes our notice because it unfolds at different timescales and through signals unlike our own?

This question inspires a 360-degree approach to plant behaviour research. To understand how a plant perceives its environment, responds to change and interacts with other organisms, we need to observe the different dimensions of its life together. A stem’s movement, root activity and substances released into the environment each tell part of the story. The challenge is to piece them together.

This is the aim of Mind(the)Plant, the experimental platform presented by researchers at the University of Padua, founded by the ERC grant ROOMors and recently published in the journal Methods in Ecology and Evolution ( https://doi.org/10.1111/2041-210x.70411 ). Within a controlled environment, the system combines three-dimensional reconstruction of movements, monitoring of emitted volatile compounds, and root imaging. Measurements share a common timeline, making it possible to connect activities that are often studied separately.

Imagine trying to understand a conversation by watching only the speaker’s gestures. Or listening to their voice without knowing the situation they are in. We would miss the connections between its different elements. This illustrates the difficulty we face when we study separately processes that unfold together in a plant’s life.

When a movement changes, what happens to the other signals? Does a change in chemical emissions precede, accompany or follow a visible response? And what is happening underground at the same time? Connecting these observations allows researchers to develop new hypotheses about how the whole plant functions.

Perception and communication also become concrete research questions. Which environmental changes are detected, and how do they shape responses? When does a substance released by one plant affect another? Tracking movements, emissions and roots together provides a foundation for designing experiments that address these questions.

The platform is designed to grow with the research, with future extensions including the recording of electrical signals. The study verifies its reliability and demonstrates coordinated data collection: a step towards understanding the relationships between different aspects of plant activity.
The next time we pause beside a plant, we might give it a few more seconds. Behind that quiet presence there is a life whose rhythms, signals and relationships we are learning to recognise. To begin to understand it, we must learn to observe what happens together.
